Use the result in four passes

  1. 1Check the baseline. Seven spots across a 50-minute match gives your roster 350 available field minutes.
  2. 2Set the target. With 12 players, the equal share is about 29.2 minutes each.
  3. 3Mark the exceptions. Keep a goalkeeper in, account for a late arrival, or adjust around an injury when the math does not fit the match.
  4. 4Verify it live. Open the sheet in Match Day and record the actual substitution when the game changes.

Common questions

Equal playing time, explained

How do you calculate equal playing time?

Multiply players on the field by game length, then divide by roster size. A 60-minute 9v9 match with 13 players averages 41.5 minutes each.

How often should coaches substitute?

6-10 minute windows for 7v7, 8-12 minutes for 9v9. Shorter windows help large rosters, hot weather, and younger players.

Why does a bigger roster make it harder?

Every extra bench player lowers the average. A 7v7 team with 10 players averages 35 minutes in a 50-minute game; at 14 players, that drops to 25.
