11v11 formations

11v11 soccer formations and lineups.

Your U13 team reaches its first full-sized field, the back line drops toward its own box, and the striker is suddenly 40 yards from midfield. Choose the formation by fixing that broken connection first, not by copying a professional lineup.

Quick answer: best 11v11 soccer formation

A 4-3-3 is a balanced 11v11 formation for youth teams that are ready to use width and a three-player midfield. A 4-4-2 is often easier to teach because it has two clear banks of four, while a 4-2-3-1 gives extra protection in front of the back line.

Worked coach scenario

Your 4-3-3 looks like a back four and six separate attackers.

Twelve minutes into an early U13 match, both fullbacks stay beside the center backs, the two number 8s run ahead of the ball, and the wingers wait on the touchlines. The goalkeeper keeps playing long because no short pass feels safe. Changing to 4-4-2 may make the whiteboard simpler, but it will not fix those distances by itself.

Use the Three-Connection Test before changing the formation: check the first pass out, the midfield link, and the width behind the ball. The failed connection tells you which adjustment to make.

If the first pass is blocked

Keep the 4-3-3 and drop the number 6 between or beside the center backs. Ask one fullback to advance, not both. If players still cannot identify the free side, rehearse the restart before adding another formation.

If midfield is disconnected

Stagger the midfield three instead of placing them on one horizontal line. If the two number 8s continue leaving together, use a 4-2-3-1 so two holding players share the first connection.

If the roles are too complex

Use 4-4-2 for two visible banks of four and give each wide pair one rule: when one presses, the other covers inside. Return to 4-3-3 only after players can keep those distances without constant instruction.

Next-session action

At the next practice, mark three horizontal zones and play 8v6 from the goalkeeper toward halfway for four six-minute rounds. After each round, record which connection failed first. Change one player height or role for the next round; change the full formation only if the same connection fails twice after the role adjustment.

What are the positions in 11v11 soccer?

An 11v11 lineup has one goalkeeper and ten outfield players arranged as defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Common roles include center backs, fullbacks, central or holding midfielders, wingers, attacking midfielders, and strikers. The formation determines how many players fill each role.

Where do you put weak players in 11v11 soccer?

Do not permanently label or hide a developing player. Give them a simple role with nearby support. A wide position can limit the number of directions they must scan, while a central role usually demands faster decisions. Rotate positions over time so one early weakness does not become a permanent label.

Why is 4-4-2 not used anymore?

Many higher-level teams prefer three central midfielders, flexible pressing shapes, or an extra player between the lines, which can outnumber a flat 4-4-2 midfield. The formation is still useful in youth soccer because its two banks of four are easy to recognize and coach.

What age do players start 11v11 soccer?

In the common U.S. development pathway, players begin full-sided 11v11 soccer at U13 after playing 9v9 at U11 and U12. League formats can vary, so coaches should confirm the competition rules and field setup for their age group.

How do you move a team from 9v9 to 11v11?

Carry familiar relationships into the larger format. A 3-2-3 can become a 4-3-3 by adding another defender and another midfielder while preserving the front three. Teach the extra width and recovery distance in practice before asking players to solve it during a match.

The first 11v11 lineup should be readable, not clever. Keep the back line connected, give the central midfielders different starting heights, and tell each wide player who provides width when the team has the ball.
